5 Surprising Benefits of Drinking Coffee

Reduces the Risk of Parkinson’s Disease (PD)

PD is a neurodegenerative disease that affects movement and is associated with a deficiency in the chemical dopamine. From an article published at the Harvard Medical School, caffeine has a variety of receptors in the brain, the biggest one being adenosine, another chemical that hinders brain activity. When caffeine attaches itself to a part of the brain that is affected by PD, the striatum, it counteracts the effects of adenosine and increases dopamine levels.

Protects Your Body

You have probably heard of antioxidants, right? And you know that foods containing antioxidants are like gold? Well, coffee contains a variety of beneficial antioxidants and even has more of it than red wine, black, and green tea. When you can consume a diet rich in antioxidants, it helps reduce the risk of cancer, prevents premature aging, and can promote cognitive health.

Lowers Risk of Type II Diabetes

Diabetes affects the amount of sugar in the blood. Your body should also produce a hormone called insulin, which helps glucose to travel from the blood to your cells. With Type I diabetes, bodies don’t produce insulin. With Type II diabetes, bodies don’t make enough insulin or are not efficient at making the hormone, preventing glucose from reaching the cells. Coffee contains polyphenols and magnesium, which work to increase the effectiveness of insulin and helps glucose metabolize in the body.

Helps Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

More research is needed in order to determine how effective coffee is at preventing Alzheimer’s disease, however, thee out of five studies support this claim. A Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Aging and Dementia study found that “coffee drinking of 3-5 cups per day at midlife was associated with a decreased risk of dementia/AD by about 65% at late-life.” This may be due to coffee’s antioxidant levels and an increased insulin sensitivity.

Helps Fight Depression

Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee contain antioxidants, which reduce damaging oxidative stress and prevents cell inflammation. Because of its neurological benefits, coffee can act as an antidepressant, helping to increase attention and alertness, reducing anxiety, and improving mood. In one observational study that included over 330,000 participants, the authors found the risk of depression was reduced by 24% when comparing those who drank four or more cups of coffee per day and those who drank less than one cup a day.

Everyone reacts slightly differently to coffee, so if you have a history of Alzheimer’s Disease or want to lose weight, there are various things to consider than just your coffee intake. However, if you enjoy a morning cup of joe, these are a few benefits that you may be able to look forward to!
